FP7 - ANIMPOL KBBE-2007-3-3-04
The project aims at the sustainable and value-added conversion of waste from slaughterhouses, rendering industry, and waste fractions of the biodiesel production. Slaughterhouse waste is converted towards fatty acid esters (FAMEs, biodiesel); subsequently FAMEs consisting of saturated fatty acids that negatively influence the biodiesel properties as a fuel are biotechnologically converted towards high-value biopolymers (polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs)).

The overall objective of BioTop is to identify technical opportunities and research needs for Latin America (LA) and to create and support specific RTD cooperation activities between Latin America and the European Union (EU).
BIOSCOPES (2006-2007) - Biofuels Initiative: New applications "Biodiesel: Improvement on Standards, Coordination of Producers & Ethanol Studies"
The objectives of the BIOSCOPES project are:
a) To update the test methods of EN 14214 by standardizing the (existing) field experience and if necessary to develop new methods. It is the aim to develop further existing test procedures that way that the data of accuracy will be improved clearly.
b) To identify possibilities and to make proposals for the production and use of fatty acid ethyl esters, a biofuel, which consists of 100% renewable resources.
4) “Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development”
FP5 - BIODIEPRO (2003-2005): Demonstration of the Production of Biodiesel from Tallow and Recovered Vegetable Oil
The aim of the project is to study, if proteins can be destroyed during biodiesel production from animal fat, so the transesterification reaction under alkaline conditions could be a possible route for decontamination of TSE-material. With the newest analytical methods and procedures the biodiesel samples will be examinated on protein content. It is assumed that most of the proteins will be destroyed during transesterification. So it is necessary to use analytical methods with very high sensitivity.
5) “Quality of Life and Management of Living Resources”
FP5 - BIOSTAB (2001-2003): Oxidative Stability of Biodiesel
In the project, relevant topics will be investigated to overcome this gap of knowledge. Suitable determination methods for the oxidation, thermal and storage stability will be worked out. The influence of storage conditions on the fuel quality properties and the effects of natural and synthetic antioxidants will be investigated. A comprehensive test programme including bench and field tests will be carried out in order to find a relationship between the stability and special effects during use.

The k-project ECO-PowerDrive-2 aims at a reduction of emissions and fuel consumption of non-automotive spark ignition and smallest compression ignition engines under real world operating conditions, also for the use of renewable fuels.
Based on the well-established research consortium of the actual call-2 k-project ECO Powerdrive, an extended consortium consisting of the University of Graz Institute for Chemistry, the TU-Graz Institute for Electrical Measurement and Measurement Signal Processing as well as the Upper Austrian University of Applied Sciences and the company partners AVL, BMW, BRP-Powertrain, Emitec, OMV, Stihl and Viking has been formed under the guidance of the consortium leader TU-Graz Institute for Internal Combustion Engines and Thermodynamics.
The overall research program focuses on the development of technologies for the minimization of regulated gaseous emissions and CO2 under real world operating conditions, comprising non-automotive spark ignition engines as well as extremely downsized automotive Diesel engines and hybrid-powertrain concepts for the use in small automotive and two-wheeler applications.
